Otherkin Nina Berry Books
I remember when this book came out. Otherkin as a trend were reaching a peak.I tried to read this early on but then set it aside and it took a while for me to start reading it again. Having finished it at last, I have to say that it was probably better that way. There is absolutely nothing original in this book. It's like every single element was plucked out of a generic shopping catalog and plopped in like cheap decorations.
There's the beautiful teen girl that thinks she's ugly and unlovable.
The attractive and mysterious love interest who 'sees her as she really is' tm.
REWRITTEN SALEM HISTORY!! Gee, no one has ever thought to do THAT before.
Wolf shifters. Because you gotta have werewolves.
Then there's the typical Chosen One plot, the religious fanatics, the heroine is the only one who comes up with the good ideas and unites everyone and of course sees everything everyone else misses.
There's more but I think I get my point across. Generic shape shifter YA fiction. I only gave it two stars because it's written better than most. I only found a handful of typos and they were easy to figure out what the intended word or spelling was. It wasn't a TERRIBLE book, it was just completely unimaginative. Change the names and you have just about any other shifter book out on the market today.
Purchase at your own peril.

Otherkin Nina Berry Books Reviews
I love this book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read about shapeshifters. I love books about supernatural.
This novel was sent as a recommendation for me by and I am more than happy to have bought it! It was a novel I finished in a few hours and was onto the second, I just could not put it down for the life of me!!
As a 67 year old grandma who bought this book for her teenage granddaughter and read it first I must, for the first time, write a book review. This first installment of the "Otherkin" series by Nina Berry is a great read! I am actually going to pre-order the second book immediately. I read the entire book in one sitting, not wanting to put it down until it was over (for now) and that time turned out to be 5 a.m. I will now send the book to my granddaughter who, I'm sure, will do the same and recommend it to her friends. Good Job, Nina!
I thoroughly enjoyed this quick, couldn't-put-down read on a long flight. Otherkin provided a happy distraction, just the right amount of suspense, a few plot twists, and a little romance. Author Nina Berry's next book in the series, Othermoon, comes out at the end of January 2013--based on Otherkin, I will purchase and devour it as well. Otherkin appropriately falls into the Young Adult category, but I've been a full-fledged adult for several decades and loved it, too.
i gave this book only four stars because the twists were pretty predictable. that said i really enjoyed the characters and how they grew. i had to suspend belief at the patience the heroine and the ability of the tribunal to be everywhere.
would also have liked more insight into a tribunal full of others.

OTHERKIN is truly a five-star read, and I don't say that lightly. I don't hand out five star reviews like LSD tabs at a warehouse rave. I hoard them. I savor them. I wield them like a regal sceptre, bestowing my royal blessing on a chosen few. OTHERKIN is definitely one of those few. I didn't know exactly what to expect, but it had a unique premise. I dig shapeshifters, especially when they're turning into something other than wolves. And Berry takes the whole idea to a new level. She really elevates it into something more. Something stand-alone.
OTHERKIN takes off fast. There's very little runway for that launch. I wasn't sure how I'd like that at first, but Berry is quick and smooth at filling in all the bits of information and background after the fact that weave a complete main character, world, and concept. Additionally, the back brace angle is sheer genius. Her main character, Dez, has instant likeability because of the vulnerability the brace creates in her. The romance elements are strong and perfectly written. There's just enough tension, just enough give and take, to keep you swooning all the way through.
The world Nina builds, and the Othersphere, are fascinating. I'm definitely looking forward to visiting again. And just as the plot for book one winds down, the stakes go up, so that Dez's identity and purpose keep you guessing. There are some definite unexpected surprises tucked away, which I love. Twists and turns you never see coming. And, the cherry on top yay for Wiccan moms! Add all that together and you have a powerhouse of a novel and a running start on what looks to be an awesome series. I can't wait to see what Berry delivers next!
This story has themes all teenagers can identify with - from being an outsider to the quest for self-identity to physical insecurities to the awkwardness of first love. Dez was adopted and has never really fit in with her peers at school. She has scoliosis and has been forced to wear a back brace that hurts physically and mentally. Finding out she's a shape shifter and can take the form of a tiger is almost a relief, especially as the shape shifting straightens her back!
In this fast read, coming of age book, Dez learns who she is, finds a boy who can keep up with her (no small task for a shape-shifting tiger) and finally fits in with her real peer group - at a school of other shape shifters!
A great YA book for paranormal, romance and fantasy fans and the teen in us all.
