I was in the mood for something supernatural to go with my Austenesque fiction and already had a love affair with this author's writing so it was an easy choice to join in a group read for this story.

Austenesque variations are fun reading to see how authors can be so very creative with Jane Austen's stories and characters. I found this one a lovely and gentle handling of the original story and characters while blazing an entirely new trail from the point that the Bingleys and Darcy leave Netherfield for London.

Darcy thinks he is dreaming as does Elizabeth when she appears in his library. They both take advantage of this to set aside the stiff politeness that society dictates and discover the truth behind his reserve and her impertinence. They are both astounded by what they learn and grow more uneasy as the true state of affairs dawns on them. Fate has gotten involved and they both cling to the hope that all of the fantastic happenings meant that they were to be together even when matters seem hopeless.

I enjoyed this variation that treaded lightly over what could have been angsty and difficult ground. In fact, much of the early story was vastly amusing. The reader knows what Darcy and Elizabeth do not and can only wait to see how they will respond when they know the truth, meanwhile, the pair are delightful and amusing.

I also appreciated how the author was able to build up suspense each time the reader starts to get complacent about how things are going to happen. The end was more triumphant and romantic as a result.

On a side note, the changes in the Bennets and other surrounding characters altered the story even further. Seeing devoted parents in the Bennets and even a Lydia who has an interesting twist on her story with Wickham was a great pleasure to read.

So, all in all, this was a fantastic read that I heartily recommend to Pride & Prejudice variations fans who would enjoy sweet paranormal historical romance.

Haunting Mr Darcy A Spirited Courtship Karalynne Mackrory Christina Boyd Ellen Pickels 9781936009350 Books Reviews

My wife read this book and so enjoyed it that she offered to read it aloud to me. I looked forward to each evening that she would read to me this enchanting story of the two most read and written about characters in romantic literary history Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett. This story allows them to get to know each other in what seems to be either a dream (on Elizabeth's part) or utter madness (on Darcy's). Imagine for a moment having the love of your life attached to you wherever you go and you are the only one who can see that person. Wouldn't you think you were going 'round the bend just a little? And as you talked with this wonderful specter, the people around you would surely think you were "off just a little". Thus it is for Mr. Darcy, as he gets to know Miss Elizabeth on a very intimate level. "Haunting Mr. Darcy" really is one of the best fan versions I have ever "read" or heard. One cannot help but get as intimately involved in their story as is humanly possible. The writing is fresh, funny, surprising, clean, and just plain exceptional. This is a "must read".
This was a well written Pride and Prejudice variation, and the plot was sweet and, at times, quite funny! But it wasn't 'supernatural' enough for me, despite the imaginative premise. It was of course amusing to see Elizabeth trailing after Darcy, making inappropriate commentary, and being a general distraction in his well-ordered life. For me, it felt more like a Hallmark movie than a supernatural-angst story. I'm sure that's what the author intended, though not quite what I was looking for.

There didn't seem to be any real consequences for Darcy talking to a person that no one else could see, at any point. Sure, his cousin and sister thought he might be going crazy, but were talked out of it and brushed off their concerns for the most part. He even manages to sneak into Elizabeth's bedroom twice (and not for what you're thinking) without being caught! There wasn't quite enough angst or drama there for me - so, as I said, very Hallmark-y. Though if you're into that, this is perfect for you!

It was creative, well-written, and cleverly incorporated recognizable scenes and quotes from the original book - in a different way/context than they were originally used! It was interesting to see it all come full circle to the proposal at Huntsford, but with a much different outcome. Overall, not angsty or thrilling enough that I'd read it over and over again, but a sweet story and worth a read all the same.
